The world has changed practically overnight. Today, being physically present in a classroom is a thing of the past. With the rise of the Internet in tier 1,2 & 3 cities and new technologies emerging as we speak, we have access to all kinds of education online. It’s in fact, the revolution of online learning.
The Indian education market is the second largest market for e-learning after the US. According to India Brand Equity Foundation, the e-learning sector is expected to reach $1.96 billion by 2021 with around 9.5 million users.
Though at this point in India, only a small part of the Indian population has access to online education, the government is trying to promote several programmes through the digital India initiative, to grow this sector, so hopefully more children and students will have access to it in the future.
Here are some of the upsides of online learning:
- Environmentally friendly: Online learning is better for the environment. No one needs to commute and pollute the environment. The Open University in Britain has found that online courses equate to an average of 90% less energy and 85% fewer CO2 emissions per student than traditional in person courses.
- Flexibility: Its flexible for the student and the teacher. The teacher can set the curriculum at a reasonable pace and a student can learn from anywhere across India or other countries too as long as there is a good Internet connection.
- Wide spectrum: It offers a wide variety of courses and programmes from physics to music to Artificial Intelligence. Universities in India and across the world offer different courses across a wide spectrum. There is an option for everyone
- Budget friendly: It’s easy on everyone’s purse strings. One saves a lot of money on books and uniforms. And often universities offer scholarships and options for paying in instalments which is also an attractive feature.
- Smaller classrooms: Its interactive as the number of students in a class is generally smaller so students feel they have the flexibility to ask more questions and are more alert. Additionally, students can also have a ready access to all kinds of learning materials, such as videos, photos, recordings, forums, discussion platforms.
- Recognized everywhere: Online degrees are accepted the world over as long as they are accredited by a reputed University
What’s more, with the onset of COVID-19, the story gets even better. Online learning will be the future.
With reskilling and upskilling being the need of the hour, online learning becomes all the more important for students keen on widening their horizon in addition to attending school or college.
The best part is that there’s no paperwork; Online learning offers instant results when it comes to scoring of exam papers. Teachers don’t need to go through reams of papers and can leverage the competent automated scoring systems that are available today.
According to a KPMG survey , it is anticipated that by 2021, online primary and secondary supplemental education will be very prominent with 39% of market share. Also, online test preparation is estimated to grow at the fastest rate reaching a striking CAGR of 64% during the upcoming five years. And most importantly, a noteworthy point made in this study is that initially online platforms merely acted as connectors between content providers and consumers. However, the notion has been changing over the years, and now the platforms are more like content providers and curators.
So the great news is, that online learning has a very optimistic future in India.
Hop on and let’s enjoy the ride. It only gets faster and better.
